A graduate of the University of Maine, Friend was named co-captain of the Black Bears in his senior year where he scored four goals, had three assists and led his teammates in minutes played over fifteen games. During his college years he also played for the Virginia Beach Submariners in the USL Premier Development League. In April 2007, he signed with the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division, but never entered a league game and was released by the team at the end of the season. He subsequently joined Maine Sting of the National Premier Soccer League in 2008, for that team's debut season in professional competition.
