Talk:Controversial Deaths in UK Police Custody

[edit] Some?

Surely there were some white people, (mebbe Irish?) who died in police custody in the UK. Please list them too. SolidPlaid 04:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Of course there are. I created the page with a certain amount of information. feel free to add all cases relevant. Chendy 16:13, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

The opening statement is cited from an article based on opinion, and if you relate this to the page "UK Deaths In Custody" it shows that the number of deaths of black/ethnic minority people in UK prisons is not by any means unusually large. I feel that in order for this page to have any purpose other than to cause opinionated ethnic divisions which have no encyclopedic merits, the exact figures for "deaths of black/ethnic minority people in UK prisons" needs to be directly related to the exact percentage of black/ethnic minorities in UK prisons - something which is clearly void from this article.

I would also like the heading of "Controversial Deaths in UK Police Custody" to be changed as it has very little baring on the article. I actually came to the page looking for details of IRA suspects which may have been killed under controversial circumstances in police custody; and this article is simply quoting black/ethnic minority cases. It has a politcal agenda and not an educational one.--212.158.111.130 (talk) 23:56, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deeply problematic

This article is incredibly problematic as it stands now, and I'm not sure we should keep it at all. For one thing the content (and indeed the entire concept of the article) is entirely based on this page which is the only significant source. Essentially all this article does is reduplicate the content on that page, which might pose a copyright problem but at the very least is not good enough for an encyclopedia article. The original article deals with "black and minority ethnic individuals" but this article only refers to blacks for some reason (though under the "ethnicity" category everyone is listed as "black /ethnic minority" which is just bizarre). Is there some particular plan to transform this into a real encyclopedia article rather than a copy of report from the Institute of Race Relations and a brief mention of an article in New Statesman? The same could be asked of the article UK Deaths in Custody, created by the same user. At the very least we should only have one of these articles but I'm not even sure about that.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 20:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

fine by me. Chendy (talk) 22:36, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but do you mean it's fine to only have one article? Even if that's the case there are several other issues with these articles mentioned above. I'm more of a mind to just put them up for deletion, but if you have specific ideas about how to make them more encyclopedic I'm open to that possibility.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 23:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
