The Continental Hockey League or Kontinental Hockey League (Kontinentalnaya Hokkeynaya Liga in Russian) is a new open international ice hockey league in Eurasia. The trophy of the league is the Gagarin Cup. The KHL replaced the Russian Super League after the 2007-2008 RSL season.

The KHL will be comprised of 24 teams, including the 20 current teams from the RSL, Barys Astana from Kazakhstan and Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg from Russia (both currently competing in the Vysshaya Liga), Dynamo Minsk from Belarus, as well as Riga based Latvian team Dinamo Riga.

[edit] Possible 2009-10 expansion
It has been reported that the league seeks to expand to 30 teams for the 2009-10 season.[1] Two of the teams who have been invited are Swedish sides Frölunda HC and Färjestads BK, neither club has accepted nor rejected the offer as of yet.[1]
Ukraine's HC Sokil Kyiv may join in the near future. According to Russia Today News, Finland's Kärpät is also interested. [1]
