Congress Hall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Congress Hall can refer to:

  • Congress Hall, the structure (at Chestnut, near 6th Street) the U.S. Congress sat in from December 6, 1790 to late 1800 when Philadelphia was the temporary capital of the United States while Washington, D.C. was under construction. Philadelphia replaced New York after the First Congress, meeting in Federal Hall in New York near the corner of Wall & Broad Streets, passed the Residence Act of 1790 which established the District of Columbia as the future permanent capital and made Philadelphia the interim seat of government. It should not be confused with Independence Hall, the original Pennsylvania Statehouse and site of the Second Continental Congress and the United States Constitutional Convention, which is the building next door. The Presidential Mansion was at 190 High Street (now demolished), replacing the executive residence at 10 Cherry St in New York.
