[edit] Previous service pattern

Since early privatisation, Virgin trains have served the station every two hours during the day on Monday to Saturdays. This was agreed by Virgin Trains in order to prevent increased use of the line by Stopping Services.

Until 2003, Congleton was served on Monday to Friday by around 19 local stopping services which consisted of approximately 11 southbound services (one starting from Macclesfield) and 9 trains northbound (some semi-fast). The number of local services operating on Saturday varied but remained similar to weekday services. 3 trains each way operated on a Sunday.

All these local services were operated by North Western trains, who were latterly known as First North Western Trains.

[edit] Today

Today the station is managed by Northern who now operate 7 trains a day Monday to Friday, 3 southbound (one from Macclesfield only) and 4 northbound (one semi-fast). On Saturdays there are now 2 train southbound (one from Macclesfield only) and 2 trains northbound. On Sundays there are still three trains in each direction.

Additionally Arriva Cross Country operate increased services Monday to Saturday to Stockport, Manchester Piccadilly, Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham New Street. Brighton, Reading, Guildford and Gatwick Airport. These operate every 2 hours during the day with increased services during the peak hours.
This was a continuation of an agreement to prevent an increase in stopping service between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-trent.

[edit] 2008

It has been announced by the transport secretary that in December 2008 when a new and revamped timetable is launched once the West Coast Main Line upgrade work has been completed, that more train services will be introduced to serve Congleton.

Northern will increase the number of services which call at Congleton by re-introducing the hourly service which was axed in circa 1994. At the same time, more cross-country services to Manchester, Birmingham and beyond will stop during morning and evening peak. However the current two hourly Cross-country services stop during the day will be removed
