Concordia University is a Christian university affiliated with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and the Concordia University System located in northeast Portland, Oregon.

Concordia Academy was founded in 1905[1] by a growing Lutheran community in the Northwest to meet the need for pastors and parochial school teachers.
In 1950[2], Concordia added a Junior College, and in 1968[3] girls were first admitted to Concordia High School. The number of general education students continued to grow, and an association of local Lutheran churches was formed to continue the high school without the support of the national church body.[citation needed]
In 1962[4] Concordia achieved accreditation with the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Fifteen years later, in 1977[5], Concordia separated from the high school and became a four year institution, graduating its first baccalaureate students in 1980[6].
In 1995[7], Concordia College became Concordia University and converted to the semester calendar. It joined the Concordia University System started by the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.[citation needed]
In 2002[8], the Masters in Education became Concordia's first program to also be fully online.
Current enrollment (as of 2008) is approximately 1,600 students[9].

Concordia University contains four colleges of study: the College of Education, the School of Management, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Theology, Arts and Sciences. Through these colleges the university offers undergraduate degrees in biology, history, education, English, theology, social work, a new nursing program (the most competitive program at Concordia - Portland) and many other subjects. Additionally, the university offers graduate degrees in education and business administration and may be offering a new master's degree in history in the relatively new future.[when?][citation needed]
The motto of Concordia University is "Christi Crux Est Mihi Lux," which translates to The Cross of Christ is Light to Me.[citation needed]

Concordia has been noted for the consistent success of its men's and women's soccer programs over the last decades. The men's program is headed by Dan Birkey, and the women by Grant Landy. The "Cavaliers" dominate the Cascade Collegiate Conference of the NAIA. Since the CCC's inception in 1997, the men have won eight of the ten conference championships, and are frequently ranked among the nation's top 25 for NAIA small colleges.[10]
