"The shops along Columbia road have opening times entirely aligned with market hours: Sunday morning only. Only the Royal Oak, pictured below, the chemist and the local Londis are open at other times"
Is this true? I was drinking in a place called The Fleapit on Columbia Road a few weeks ago, and that definitely wasn't on a Sunday morning. There were other pubs and cafes open too. Also, it sound unlikely that any business in London could survive only being open a few hours a week, or that it would be particularly desirable to have a street completely almost all of the time.86.0.203.120
I think it's a bit exaggerated. There certainly used to be some like that - it's essentially a small residential neighbourhood when the market isn't on - so, without the market a lot of shops would find it difficult to make money anyway. There are some 'yards' in local streets that are workshops during the week, and only open to the public at weekends. I haven't been there for sometime. I wrote bits of the history of the market, but left the modern market to people with more contemporary experience. The bohemian Saturday Broadway market, nearby has attracted shops that are open through the week, but it's very quiet 'off-market'. They do open - so I think it would be much the same. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't open Mondays - after working on Sunday, but as I say, it needs someone with more specific local knowledge to rephrase it. Kbthompson 08:56, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
