Colo-Colo (from mapudungun "colo-colo", mountain cat; b. 1490 – d. 1555) was a leader of Mapuche people around the time when Spanish conquest began in the south of Chile. He held the position of "Toqui de la Paz" (Peace Chief) but took over strategic duties when confrontation began. Alongside Lautaro and Caupolicán he directed mapuche warriors at Tucapel battle, in which Spanish army, leaded by Pedro de Valdivia, was defeated.
By that time he was a 60-something elder widely respected by mapuche people. Among his captains we can find headchiefs whose names are parte of Chile's present geography: Paicabí, Lemo Lemo, Lincoyán, Elicura y Orompello, just to name a few.
It is believed that his death happened during the great famine and tiphoyd fever wave of the drought of 1555-1558.
His name was used by the most popular football team in Chile, directly named Colo-Colo.
