Is it Collier's Wood, Colliers Wood, or Colliers' Wood? -- Zoe
The tube map has no apostrophe. -- Tarquin 23:23 Jan 1, 2003 (UTC)
Having lived there (for my sins), no apostrophe. It was a wood full of colliers and not a wood belonging to colliers. --Jm butler 16:02, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Is The sainsburys in Colliers Wood still "one of the largest supermarkets in Europe? colin
-- I would recommend removing that bit about 'largest supermarket in Europe' as no source has been provided Thecyberwasp 22:36, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
-- Removed sainsburys reference as no source provided and cannot find one on google. infact http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/destinations/City/destinationInfo.asp?selCRS=MHS quotes that the largest one is in Meadowhill. Thecyberwasp (talk) 15:46, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Just asking, but what's the difference between "a wood full of colliers", and "a wood belonging to colliers", with regard to an apostrophe? I see what Jm butler is getting at above, but I think either would indicate an apostrophe. Contemporary usage is another matter though, and I'm sure it's true that there's no apostrophe now. But! My point is that those colliers need mentioning in the article, regarding the etymology of the name. Or, does "Colliers" actually derive from some notable person, local or otherwise? Curious minds need to know - so they can put it in the article! ;o) Nortonius (talk) 11:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- The colliers would have been charcoal burners, presumably living in huts in the wood and coppicing (but not that I have a reference for that). Man vyi (talk) 12:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Great! I was scratching my head a bit over those colliers - charcolliers seem obvious, now you mention them! There will be a ref somewhere I suppose - I've got a copy of Ekwall's English Place-Names, but Colliers Wood isn't listed. Presumably it's listed in the English Place-Name Society's Surrey volume, but I can't get sight of it for annoying, personal reasons - hey ho! Cheers. Nortonius (talk) 12:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
