"The reason for this was to help the economy of Turkey and keep the money in Turkey."? I don't think this is valid. The company producing the drink (Ülker) is private and there is no reason they would enter the market for the sake of "national interest."

You don't undersatnd the nationalism in Turkey. People are willing to buy everything made in Turkey and made by Turkey, even if costs more and has worse quality than foreign brands. You know that old saying, "For us, by us".
