[edit] Summary

This image demonstrates luminance shifting as a result of chroma subsampling.

Image was generated from Vegas using it's color bars. It was shifted one over to get the chroma subsampling happening (i.e. the transition doesn't straddle the 4:1:1 sampling). Vegas' DV codec does some filtering on encoding, so this is not a 'pure' demonstration of chroma subsampling!
