Hauser was born in Santa Barbara, California, the son of Cass Warner, who founded the film production company Warner Sisters,[1] and actor Wings Hauser.[2][3] His paternal grandfather was Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dwight Hauser. Cole Hauser's maternal great-grandfather was famous film mogul Harry Warner, a founding partner of Warner Bros., and his maternal grandfather was Milton Sperling, a Hollywood screenwriter and independent film producer. His maternal grandmother, Betty Mae Warner, a painter, sculptor, political activist and gallery owner, is now married to Stanley Sheinbaum, a noted political activist, economist, philanthropist, and a former Los Angeles Police Department commissioner. Cole Hauser is of Irish descent on his father's side and Jewish on his mother's.[4][5][6]

Coles’ parents divorced in 1977 when he was 2 years old.[7] According to him, he first met his Dad after the relocation-induced years of separation at roughly 15. His father took him in for one year and taught him a thing or two about auditioning.[8] Prior to that, his restless, but easy-going Mom had moved Cole and his half brother and sisters from Santa Barbara to Oregon, to Florida, then back to Santa Barbara within a 12-year-span. At the time, young Cole delved heavily and enthusiastically into sports, but he seemed to pursue school less than half-heartedly. A good friend tried to lure him into school acting classes since Cole’s fainting interest in the school curriculum passed as convincing as it comessince Cole’s fainting interest in the school curriculum passed as convincing as it comes.[9] Just for the fun of it, the two boys applied for a renowned talent summer camp in New England, and got admitted to the elitist, short-listed circle of hopeful talents. A very clueless, insouciant and stunned Cole got the leading role of the stage play named Dark of the Moon plus standing ovations for his performance on top of it. Bug-bitten, he turned all energy to this wondrous craft, his interest in continued schooling however consistently fading. He was about 16 years old, when he faced his liberal, but wary parents with the strong determination to leave High School behind and try to break into acting.[10] His parents gave him 6 months to make it. After endless, unsuccessful auditions he finally got his break and was invited to fill out the first credited role for the movie School Ties. Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused came along his way subsequently. He met plenty of fresh-faced youngsters, thitherto unknown to the public, on the respective movie sets, such as Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Rory Cochrane, Parker Posey, and Matthew McConaughey, just to name a few. Cole is still buddies with all of them.

During the early 1990s, Hauser had supporting roles in the films School Ties, Dazed and Confused, Higher Learning, and Good Will Hunting. In 2003, he played a soldier in Tears of the Sun and a mob boss in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He has since had several leading roles in Hollywood films, including Paparazzi and The Cave, and starred in the 2007 television series K-Ville.
Currently, Cole’s art house indie production The Stone Angel adapted from a novel by Margaret Laurence, and shot in 2006, is playing the festival circles and will be in limited release in Canadian theaters from May, 9th 2008. From mid-January onwards, Cole has been filming non stop indie productions such as Like Dandelion Dust from a novel by Karen Kingsbury, Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys and the CBS pilot The Tower, set to be picked-up.

Hauser's wife is former actress and photographer Cynthia Daniel,[11][12] who played Elizabeth Wakefield in the TV series adaptation of Francine Pascal's hit novel series, Sweet Valley High. Hauser and Daniel have a son named Ryland, born in September 2004. They are expecting their second child in 2008.[13]
Cole founded Project American Spirit,[14] an organization, which strives for giving strong moral, logistical and financial support to young disabled veterans.
