[edit] History
CoffeeCup Software was started in a coffee house called “The Raven & The Sparrow” which was owned by the company's founder, Nicholas Longo. The coffee house offered free Internet access to the public. This was the only location in Corpus Christi, Texas offering free Internet access at the time[citation needed], and only one of a dozen or so world-wide offering Internet access in 1994[citation needed].
Longo bought the domain www.coffeecup.com, and designed a website for his coffee house. He soon received requests from other business owners who wanted help designing their own sites. Longo started by designing those sites using Notepad. After designing an entire website in this manner, he felt there was an opportunity to create a program to make designing websites easier. Longo got together with a regular customer of his coffeeshop who was a programmer and they sat down and created the first version of the HTML Editor.
Since the coffee house already had the www.coffeecup.com domain name (domains cost about $100USD annually in the mid-1990’s[citation needed]), the fledgling software company was named CoffeeCup Software and the first program was named CoffeeCup HTML Editor. Longo posted the program on his website. Eventually, CoffeeCup began charging $20USD for the program. It was at that time, in 1996, that the decision was made by Longo to put away the espresso machines and devote full-time attention to developing software.
After the first year, a new programmer was hired to add enhancements to the HTML Editor. Customers began to ask for more features and extra effects to make their website stand out, and so CoffeeCup made an effort to listen to and utilize that feedback.
CoffeeCup's collected 7 tons of goods for Hurricane Katrina relief (link), raising over $1 million dollars for September 11th support and aid agencies and $50,000 for victims of the 2004 Asian Tsunami (link).
CoffeeCup offers a core group of programs free to schools. CoffeeCup Software's K–12 Donation Program allows public schools to request the Educational Software Package (ESP) Free for classroom use to elementary and secondary public schools, and public libraries.
