Pligg is an Open source Social Networking Content Management System (CMS) Combining social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication and a democratic editorial system enables users to collaboratively submit and vote articles. It was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg, where when a user submits a news article it is placed in the "upcoming" area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. The latest version is Beta 9.1 (updated 02/20/2007).

[edit] Features

[edit] Voting

Pligg offers a variety of voting options for your Pligg site. The most popular one, similar to digg, lets users click on a vote button to vote for stories. The vote number increases as more users vote for the story.

The second method Pligg offers is called the "5 Star Voting" method. Users can vote for stories based on 5 stars. Once a user clicks on a star the vote count is increased and the average star rating for the total number of votes is automatically displayed.

Admins can use the User Management feature to view and edit the users on their Pligg site. Have a user who seems to keep spamming your Pligg site? Other features of User Management include: viewing a users' submitted stories and comments, viewing the last IP address they used to log in, edit user information, set user status ("god", "admin" etc), and help users by resetting their password.

The back-ups are conveniently stored on your server and you can download them any time you want by visiting the File and MySQL backup page on your Pligg site.

As of beta 9.0, Pligg introduced "modules", or easy ways to add to features to Pligg and delete the ones you don't want without having leftover code in the core and template files. Modules can be enabled and disabled in Admin Panel > Modules. Some of the most popular modules are Private Messaging and Adsense Revenue Sharing.

Easy, just go into Admin Panel > Configuration > Template and enter the name of the template you want to use in a convenient edit-in-place interface. Users can private message their friends if the Private Messaging module has been enabled by the site administrator. All of your messages are stored in your inbox for easy retrieval. A notification of any new PMs is placed on the front page to let users know if they have any new PMs. The private messaging module uses the lightbox javascript to view and write messages.

[edit] History

Pligg, founded by Yankidank [1] and headed by lead developer AshDigg, was originally an English translation of Menéame's source code when it was released in early December 2005. Menéame is a Spanish CMS created by Ricardo Galli [2] and inspired by Digg. In December 17 2005, the name Pligg was added to differentiate from the Spanish version. Pligg has now expanded from just a translation of meneame to a very popular CMS system.
