Talk:Claude Chappe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talking about the feasibility of the "Hacking" of the Chappe Telegraph related in The Count of Montecristo, the article said "This cannot be true, since the operators only copied the positions of telegraph arms. They did not know the meaning of the coded messages and were unable to construct a message of their own. "
At least in the version I read (Which is NOT the original version in French, since I can’t speak that language), it’s clearly explained that the operator didn’t understand the message, written in Chappe code, that Montecristo/Dantes handled to him. It’s also stared in the novel that the operators didn't understand the code as a security measure.
[edit] Review comments
As the article deals mainly with the semaphore system, involves all the Chappe brothers and covers events after the subject's death, consideration should be given to moving it to Chappe semaphore or similar. The following suggestions for improvement as the article is expanded assume that it remains a biographical article:
- Appropriate infobox should be added
- Some basic biographical information required, including education details
- Main part of article should be divided into appropriate subheadings
- Information on telegraph should be expanded, and references required
- References should be expanded and preferably converted to inline format
- External links present (in French) which could be used to expand article
