Clay Sell

Clay Sell (born 1967) is the former Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States after he was sworn in March 21, 2005.

His main role as Deputy Secretary is to play a role in maintaining and strengthening the economic and national security of the Nation while supporting scientific and research missions conducted by the Department.

As Chief Operating Officer of the Department, he assists the Secretary with policy and programmatic oversight and over the 100,000 employees, and the 23 billion dollars which is the current budget. His tenure has been marred by many compliants.

Before moving to Washington, Sell practiced law in Texas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. He and his wife have three children.

On Jan. 15th., he announced that he will resign as deputy secretary of energy, effective Feb. 29. According to the former Deputy Secretary, he intends to join a Texas based energy company and run their Washington, D.C. offices.

Jeffrey Kupfer, then Chief of Staff to Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, was chosen to be acting Deputy Secretary after Sell announced his resignation. Kupfer appeared before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for a nomination hearing April 30, 2008.
