CKRU (AM)

CKRU-AM is a radio station at AM 980 kHz in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada with an oldies and talk format branded as 980 KRUZ, owned by Corus Entertainment.

The station began broadcasting back in 1942 as CHEX at 1430 kHz, until it moved to 980 kHz in 1958. CHEX became CKRU in 1992.

The CHEX call letters currently belong to CHEX-TV in Peterborough.

On October 11, 2007, CKRU applied to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to convert from the AM band to the FM band. [1]

On May 8, 2008, CKRU was given approval to convert to the FM band at 96.7 MHz. All other remaining applications for new radio stations in the Peterborough and Kawarthas area have been denied. [2]
