[edit] Kidney stones

Could someone with a good knowledge of chemistry explain how citrates help prevent the formation of kidney stones? I imagine it would be because the large citrate ion does not form crystals when it bonds weakly to calcium etc, though my knowledge here is rather limited and I have no texts to refer to. This information would be very useful for people suffering from kidney stones, in terms of understanding how drinking say orange juice helps stop the formation of the stones (crystals). [edit] Needs work

While this page is not a stub I feel it is not up to the usual wiki standard considering the central role of citrate in metabolism. It has affects on lipogenesis and is an allosteric affecter of many different enzymes and most likely loads of other things I'm not yet familiar with.--Drewlew 21:02, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
