The City of Ryde is a Local Government Area in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on the Lower North Shore and Greater Western Sydney over West Ryde and Eastwood District.
The local government area extends from the Parramatta River to the Lane Cove River which encircles the area in the north, and is bounded in the east by the peninsula of Hunters Hill and the city of Parramatta in the west.

There are 12 Councillors that constitute the Council. Those Councillors are elected for 4 year terms. The last election was held in March 2004. The next election will be held in September 2008.
The Councillors are elected to represent a particular Ward (or geographic area). At the moment Ryde Council has 3 wards with 4 Councillors elected to represent each Ward. The Councillors serving on the current term of Council are:

[edit] Description of 2007 Mayoral election
Councillor Ivan Petch was re-elected as Mayor on Tuesday 11 September 2007 for a further 12 month term. He defeated the other candidate for the position, Councillor Terry Perram. The ballot was conducted as an open vote with Clr. Petch 7 and Clr. Perram 5 votes. [4]
Councillor Clr Sarkis Yedelian was also elected as Deputy Mayor for the ensuing 12 month period. He defeated two other candidates for the position, Councillors Gabrielle O'Donnell and Vic Tagg. The first election for Deputy Mayor was conducted by the General Manager, as returning officer, which resulted in the following voting: [4]

As a result of voting, the name of Councillor Tagg, was eliminated from the voting. The second election for Deputy Mayor was conducted by the General Manager, as returning officer, which resulted in the following voting:[citation needed]

On his election, Clr Ivan Petch thanked his fellow Councillors for their support. “It is a great honour to accept the role of Mayor for the City of Ryde once more and I thank my fellow Councillors for their belief in me. The demands on this Council are considerable and together we will work as a unified team to progress our vision for the City of Ryde. [5]
“I am also delighted to welcome Clr Sarkis Yedelian to the office of Deputy Mayor. We have worked well together for the past three years since his election to Council. I look forward to working harmoniously with him in the coming year. [5]
Elected as Deputy Mayor, Clr Sarkis Yedelian , said: “This is a great privilege for me. I look forward to working closely with my colleagues in taking the City of Ryde towards our goals and to providing our community every opportunity to contribute in the decision making process.
“The City of Ryde is supported by a framework of sound economic management and backed with a solid program of community services and events. We will continue to work hard for the benefit of the people, and to identify new projects to showcase the City of Ryde as an environmental, economic and social leader.” [5]
