Sometime in February 2007, I suddenly got the thought of experimenting with what are called death growls. Originally my style was akin to Edge of Sanity's and Opeth's low grunting style mainly, and as I heard new artists which were melodic death metal at my very start, I developed my style and vocal range. At first I could only do screechy growls similar to late Arch Enemy and the low and longer growls of Opeth a bit later. I continued by adding different speeds and styles (like high-pitched screams) and sudden grunts like for example: when guitars come into play. I actually do not know how to sing so I basically specialize in death growling.
Some of my later vocals are on the lines of black metal's shrieks, such as some of Hypocrisy and mostly Catamenia, but I tried doing Adam Agius's "banshee vocals" but they are way too high and it amazes me when he does them for so long. I can hold a shriek pretty well but I'm still working on the kind of raspy vocals they normally use, but I try to growl a bit with a shriek. Afterwards I tried some harsh singing that is most common with thrash metal/groove metal and some metalcore but I'm novice at that though.
I also have an uncanny ability to do vocal impressions and sound nearly the same as the real vocalist and the style of growling I try to catch from them. Some artists I'm fond of copying are: especially Opeth with Akerfeldt's very low vocal style, both vocal styles of Hypocrisy and Catamenia with their loud "yoowww"! they use, Gojira and that "deathrash" sound they make, and a few others such as some lesser known melodic death metal bands. I also do brutal death metal vocals similar to Nile's Karl Sanders.
Using these kind of vocals are a burden on your vocal cords and can hurt your throat if done too often or incorrectly. A drink of some type of soft liquid or similar will make your voice more raspier or less squeaky if too dry, it is advised that you do this before growling to refine your vocals. I find the overall growling quite fun, it really kills your stress and lets you forget your troubles. I don't see it as something in the dark arts, I find it simply fun and is just an extra part of me. Feel free to comment on or email any of your vocal abilities or whatnot, it could get pretty interesting.
I also think there should be a media file for the vocals on the death growl article to show what they sound like, maybe using those two other "deathy"/harsh vocals from the 60s and 70s; The Who's Boris the Spider and Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" or even use a recording of myself for it, in that case it would be free content. I don't know what part of a song I should growl to though. If you happen to have a suggestion, then please contact me. :)
