Preventing housework includes reducing clutter. Trying to clean fast increases efficiency.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 1-8) People with a clean house keep busy while cleaning: if some waiting is needed during a chore, they work on another and so finish them both sooner. They get to it now before it gets worse and use a to-do list.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 9-26) Things like old shoes, toys, furniture, too much silver to polish, old faucets and farm machinery “saved for parts,” old corsages, and piles of hubcaps are junk; if they are dumped at the dump, etc, the home looks cleaner.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 27-34) In a neat home, there is somewhere to put things away and everyone is told to clean up after themselves.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 35-40) Cleaning tools and supplies are chosen with saving time and space in mind. They are sold at janitorial supply stores, the supermarket, and other places. Some people buy re-usable spray bottles and label them. Putting too much cleaner in the water destroys the solution’s ability to clean. The difference between all-purpose and stronger pH cleaner is the type of soap. The gentlest cleaner that will do the job is used, including plain water. Green cleaning means trying to lower pollution by using quality tools and not using too strong or much detergent, etc.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 41-58) The steps of cleaning are basically: dust-soak-scrub-wipe. The loose dust, dirt and debris is dusted, swept or vacuumed away. A large area is soaked a few minutes with the mildest cleaning solution needed, long enough for the dirt to come loose. Some light scrubbing might be done in the middle of this time. The soaking is essential. The mud is then wiped up with a sponge, cloth, squeegee, etc. Plain water is tried before stronger solutions. Light grease is soaked loose in five minutes with a little dishwashing liquid in water and heavy grease in 15 minutes with a little ammonia in water. To work, a scrub brush is not pressed. All tools needed are carried together to the work area first.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 59-68) People deal with interruptions by cleaning at a time when they won’t be interrupted, by cleaning after an interruption or by cleaning during an interruption and controlling their mood. They consider the best time to clean to be when there is nothing more important to do and they get energy from cleaning. While cleaning, they listen to music or visit with helpers or think, and they imagine the reward: the room being clean. People with children clean when they’re not around, or when they are around and are watching, helping, playing a game or looking at a movie. Injuries are prevented by getting help, by bending the knees when lifting instead of the back and by using the right size tools such as long handles when dusting, washing floors, etc. Washing walls and dusting are done from top down. Scrubbing is done north and south, east and west instead of in circles. Flat surfaces are cleaned from back to front toward the door or around the room clockwise. When one arm is tired the other is used. The mop or broom, etc, passes over the surface at least three times to prevent missing a spot.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 69-79) The vacuum cleaner, buckets, and other cleaning tools and supplies are stored in a utility room. The broom and mops, etc, are suspended by their handles so their heads are not touching the wall or floor. Wash cloths and sponges are dried on a wire rack. Laundry detergent and other cleaning chemicals are kept on an eye-level shelf. Supplies are carried to the work site in a plastic caddy, a basket with a short handle. Cleaning clothes worn include sneakers, loose clothing, long pants and sleeves, rubber gloves and safety glasses. Cleaning schedules are used to inspect the room rather than re-clean something that isn’t all that dirty. Hired cleaners often have insurance, bond, know-how, license and references to protect themselves. Some do spring cleaning tasks such as carpets, windows, ovens, walls and waxing floors. Others prefer regular work such as weekly or monthly straightening, dusting, vacuuming and touch up.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 79-88) Door mats both outside and inside the entrance of a large building reduce wet slipperiness and grab mud and dirt otherwise tracked throughout the building. Mats made for doors don’t slip around on the floor. Smaller door mats both outside and inside the home entrance also reduce falls and tracking if kept clean. Waste baskets and enough places to put things away make cleaning easier. Cleaning up after pets is reduced by trimming claws, washing and brushing dogs, bringing them outside enough, cleaning the cat’s litter box, training and so forth. The fungus called mildew is prevented when the object or area is kept well lighted, ventilated, dry and under 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Soiled ceiling and litter from cigarettes are prevented perhaps most easily from not smoking. The mysterious saying “clean as you go” means the need for a big cleaning session is avoided when things are cleaned and put away immediately both during and after the activity causing the mess so the area is left at least as clean as it was found. People think of various interior design and decoration changes to keep the home more easily clean in their specific situations and if they need to look for a new refrigerator, sofa, decoration and so forth they consider how easily the item being considered would stay clean as opposed to other products. Things that prevent a mess include enough towel racks, hangers and shelves. People eliminate excess furniture, toys, games, and snowmobiles. They also get things repaired such drawers that won’t open and faucets that leak and they paint unpainted wood beams and concrete floors. Things or places that might be dripped on by paint or varnish are moved or covered by something such as newspapers.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 89-103) Four drops of dish detergent in a bucket of warm water makes a window washing solution. After the window is dusted, the solution is put on the window with a sponge. After the dirt is loose, a squeegee is pulled down the window, the blade wiped with a soft cloth after each time. Non-flat glass is dried with the micro-fiber cloth instead of the squeegee and the cloth dries the windowsill at the end. Perfectionism is considered a stressful waste of time. Screens, shades, blinds and drapes are dry dusted and when they need to be washed they are wiped lightly with a damp cloth or sent to a shop to be soaked in an ultrasonic pool or dry cleaned.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 104-117) Hard floors are without carpet; soft floors, with. Toys, combs and other clutter are removed. The edges of hard floors are swept; the rest is dust mopped, once furniture polish has been sprayed on the mop. After damp mopping, the floor is damp not wet. A small surface area uses a sponge mop; a lot of floor uses a string mop. Both need a wringer. Clean, warm, soapy water is mopped on to the floor without flooding to soak the dirt off the surface. The person mopping then walks back to the starting point and uses the mop and wringer to remove the now dirty water, which is then thrown away. Stubborn spots are removed with a nylon scrub sponge and plastic scraper. Paint and transparent paint such as varnish are called seal. Seal made for concrete floors and for mortar grout are different from seal made for wood, and the wrong kind peels. A sealed surface lasts longer, is safer and cleaner, and is easier to clean than unsealed. Unsealed floors and mortar can be sealed after they have been thoroughly cleaned. People who do this read the product directions. Linoleum tile floors have wax between the tiles. People who wax floors – also a difficult job – read the product directions. Those who enjoy waxing even do floors of a roll of linoleum, to prevent scratches and wear.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 118-141) Medium pile living room carpet looks cleaner than short pile and is easier to clean than shag. Carpet in bathrooms or kitchens would need to be shampooed more often. Dirt is seen sooner on light colored carpet yet is really there in dark carpet also. A vacuum cleaner with rotating brushes that sweep the surface and vibrate the lower dirt loose, such as an upright, is bought for carpets. The bags are emptied or changed when half full. The supplementary vacuum many people own is the ten gallon wet-dry. It’s used for rafters, drapes, furniture, carpet edges, and with a different filter, toilet overflow, spills, draining fish tanks and so on. Other vacuum cleaners on the market include the little, wide, backpack and central. People police the area before vacuuming. They pick up by hand objects that would clog the rotating brush or the hose or damage the suction fan. If a paperclip or marble breaks the suction fan, it’s replaced at a repair shop. The edges of the room are swept and the places on the carpet where people tread infrequently are vacuumed an infrequent every couple of weeks. Trails are vacuumed more often. The vacuum cleaner is started with the brush roller at its highest setting. It is then lowered gradually until the brushes are first heard contacting the carpet. In general, the vacuum is moved along slowly and without going over the same area twice. Occasionally, the hose and dust brush attachment are used at the edges of the stairs and rooms.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 142-159)

Spraying carpet protector on the carpet after shampooing it makes the carpet easier to clean. If someone shuffling across the room has finger lightning, a humidifier can be used or anti-static clothing spray can be put on the carpet, to make all the dust easier to vacuum up. Two spot removers are kept on hand: the kind that removes tracked-in tar and oil, and the kind that removes food spills and blood drips. Such stains are cleaned as soon as possible. The spot is scraped up and blotted dry. The spot remover is put on the stain. It is blotted dry, then rinsed with lukewarm water and blotted dry again with the damp cloth or sponge. After the stain is gone, a dry folded towel stood on is used to dry the spot some more, or a wet-dry vacuum. Carpets are thoroughly shampooed about once a year or so. The sudsy solution is scrubbed into the carpet and mopped or vacuumed out three to five minutes later. Warm water is then blotted or sprayed in and removed to rinse the carpet. Rug scrubbers and water vacuums are bought or rented, or a good rug-cleaning service is hired which scrubs before steam cleaning for enough dwell time for the suds. Touch up cleaning is done on trails between yearly shampoos. For example, terry cloth damp with rug shampoo solution wipes the dirty area followed by another damp with plain warm water, or carpet cleaning powder is rubbed into the trail and vacuumed out.(Aslett, 2005, pp. 159-170)
