I've studied chemistry at the University of Bonn, received a diploma and doctoral degree in Organic Chemistry. Focus of my Ph. D. thesis was computer assisted structure elucidation. In 1996, I went to Tufts University in Boston, MA, USA, where I worked in the area of biomolecular NMR on the 3D structure elucidation of peptide-nucleic acid conjugates. In 1997 I became head of the Structural Chemo- and Bioinformatics Workgroup at the newly founded Max-Planck-Institute of Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. Since fall 2002 I was head of the Research Group for Molecular Informatics at the Cologne University Bioinformatics Center (CUBIC). My group develops the Chemistry Development Kit (CDK), a Java library for chemo- and bioinformatics as well as NMRShiftDB, an open content database for chemical structures and their NMR data. The group is further maintaining the SENECA system, a program suite for NMR-based computer-assisted structure elucidation. In December 2003 I received my Habilitation in Organic Chemistry from Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena, Germany. I'm a lifetime member of the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists (WATOC), chairman of the Computers-Information-Chemistry (CIC) division of the German Chemical Society and a trustee of the Chemical Structure Association (CSA) Trust.
