Christopher G. Pickering, was born in 1842. Pickering invested heavily in land and acquired land at a cost of £120 per acre.[citation needed] He offered the land to the city for housing in 1918 at a cost of £493 per acre, making a profit of £17,000.[citation needed] In the Pickering Ward on the west side of the city, there is a park that bears his name, and he built the almshouses that are situated near the front gates of the park.[citation needed] The gates of the park were purchased by Christopher Pickering for £1000. Christopher Pickering is also remembered as his name is on the reredos in the 'new' St. Nicholas Church.[citation needed] The original church, built on land donated by Christopher Pickering, had to be demolished due to subsidence, and was replaced by the efforts of the parishioners. There is also an old people's home nearby called Christopher Pickering Lodge. He died in 1920.
