Chowdhury Moyezuddin Biwshash
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chowdhury Moyezuddin Biwshash was the Zamindar of Faridpur and was considered to be one of the most powerful Muslim landlords in Bengal during British rule. He hailed from one of Bengal's most prominent Muslim zamindar families based in Biwshash Bari in the town of Chanpur just outside Faridpur. It is said that his family's lands once stretched well beyond the district and would also include large parts of the greater Faridpur region. The lands were not measured in acres but rather in square kilometeres, a sign of how great the zamindari was. It is said that during the time of Chowdhury Moyezuddin Biwshash the family lands went well beyond 4000 km².
Chowdhury Moyezuddin Biwshash played a huge role in building up protest against colonial rule as one of the patrons of the Indian National Congress party and also a valiant fighter. He also brought about many social reforms in Faridpur, including initiating the revival of Islamic practices, abolition of various racist policies against the Muslims and helped bring about equality among Hindus and Muslims in the town and nearby areas. He also built many schools, madrasas and orphanages.
Chowdhury Moyezuddin Biwshash is also the father of Muazzem Hussein Chowdhury (Lal Mia), Yusuf Ali Chowdhury (Mohan Mia) and Enayet Hossain Chowdhury (Tara Mia) who were eminent politicians during the later days of British rule and in the Pakistan era. He is the grandfather of Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, an ex Bangladeshi minister and Vice President of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
