This article needs pictures. I could provide one, but I don't know how to convert my files to a format accepted by Wikipedia. ReverendG 02:23, 1 July 2006 (UTC) uhh...nevermind. ReverendG 04:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] chillum picture link

added a link to a picture of a rastafarian colored chillum, you say you need more pictures so there is one!

I think that it would also be useful to name the various parts and exactly how to use one. I am going to put in the that the stone is called a gitthuck and the cloth a saath.

[edit] Required etiquette

"The required etiquette can become quite complex and the average Westerner has little or no chance of meeting the ritual standards of a sadhu." Is this statement not a bit pointed? Wouldn't it be just as effective to say something like "The required etiquette for the sadhu ritual is quite complex." Also, this statement seems to belong more at the beginning of the paragraph.

[edit] Conical? and other health issues

Perhaps this descriptive term (at the beginning of the article) refers to the outer shape of the chillum, but it leaves a question whether the crater (bowl) is conical too, or cylindrical which is arguably better from a health standpoint. If the crater is cylindrical, a shaped metal screen can be nested in it permitting the use of sifted (even particle size) herb which, if the user sucks slowly, will burn at a lower temperature, protecting THC and reducing smoking-related health damage.

The illustration shows a crater easily 1/2-inch in diameter. Readers should be informed that a narrower crater diameter (1/4"/6 mm.) makes it easier to use herb (cannabis, tobacco or any other) more safely and less wastefully due to a lower burning temperature. Attaching a long (20"/50cm.) extension tube to the exit end of the chillum will give the smoke additional distance to travel cooling down before reaching the user's trachea. One should also have on hand a one-liter paper or plastic sack to breathe in and out of several times after each single serving.

These technical improvements protect health without disguising the original traditional shape of the device. While nostalgia and religiosity have their place, personal responsibility for hygiene is a part of life and a part of smoking also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tokerdesigner (talkcontribs) 20:24, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
