[edit] Error in the diagram
(Discussion continued from Han-Kwang's talk page)
I just noticed something about the diagram that I uploaded which I got from an LLNL publication [on the right]. It looks like the chirp is reversed by the pulse's passage through the amplifier! Surely this would not happen in the actual case would it? Also which chirp direction is correct for the grating configuration shown? --Deglr6328 19:09, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, there are several errors in that image. Red should come out of the stretcher first. Also the positions of the lenses and the angles of the rays are incorrect. The angle of incidence of the rays on the left grating is different from that on the right grating, which won't work if the right grating is of the same type as the left one. I'm not sure whether stretcher designs exist where the two gratings are of a different type, but they certainly aren't common. The compressor part looks alright to me. I'm personally not a fan of mixing 2D and 3D objects in a schematic diagram, especially not if the shades on the 3D objects are inconsequent w.r.t. the location of the light source, but that is of course a different issue. - hmm ok well I fxied the chirp direction but about the grating pair incidence angle thing, I'm not sure I totally understand and anyway I'm not that good with image editing. sorry.--Deglr6328 04:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Look at the red beam in the stretcher. The angle at which it hits the left lens is different from that on the right lens, even though the beam between the lenses is horizontal. If the lenses have the same focal length, they should also have the same angles outside the lenses. Maybe I'll redo the whole picture some day. Han-Kwang 07:58, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
