Mission and Funding


Child Trends is a Washington, D.C. based nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization that provides social science research to policy makers and to those who directly serve children and youth. In addition to conducting its own research, Child Trends works with federal and state officials and other researchers to improve the quality, scope, and use of data on children and their families. Child Trends also works to improve public understanding of the life circumstances of America's children and youth, and of the issues that are critical to their well-being. Research


Child Trends collects and analyzes data; conducts, synthesizes, and disseminates research; designs and evaluates programs; and develops and tests promising approaches to research in the field. Child Trends publishes research briefs, reports, newsletters and presentations. Research areas include:
Child Welfare: examines policies and programs that address child abuse and neglect, foster care, and adoption.
Early Childhood Development: studies early child care and education.
Education: looks into children's academic and behavioral outcomes in school as well as family, community and school contributions to positive educational outcomes.
Health : studies the physical and socio-emotional health of children.
Indicators: tracks child, youth and family well-being as indicated by a variety of factors.
Marriage & Family: studies nonmarital childbearing and union formation among unmarried parents, and its association with child outcomes.
Parenting & Family Dynamics: examines the effects of parental involvement and interaction on child, youth and marriage outcomes.
Positive Development: studies programs and practices for positive development in children and youth.
Poverty: studies the prevalence of child poverty in the United States over time, as well as programs and policies aimed at improving outcomes for families and children in poverty.
Research-to-Results: disseminates empirical research on out-of-school programs to policy makers and program providers, and also conducts program evaluations.
School Readiness: identifies key factors that support children's preparation for school.
Teen Sex & Pregnancy: identifies factors associated with risky adolescent sexual behavior and teenage pregnancy.
Vulnerable Children & Youth: measures the prevalence, causes and consequences of belonging to a group whose healthy development is at risk.

The Child Trends DataBank is an online resource with continuously updated reports on the latest national estimates for child indicators. It also includes links to state and community-level data. The DataBank serves policy makers, service providers, researchers, advocates and the general public.
