Chikkamagaluru (also known as Chickamagalur) is a town located in Chikkamagaluru district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Located in the foothills of Bababudangiri range the town is known for its coffee and tea estates.
[edit] Origin of name
Chikkamagaluru literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna and hence the name. About 5 km from Chikkamagaluru there is a town called Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter", too. More: [www.onlinechikmagalur.com]

Chikmagalur is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 1037 metres (3402 feet). The hillstations around Chikkamgaluru are famous summer retreats since they remain cool even during summers. As of 2001 India census[2], Chikmagalur had a population of 101,022. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Chikmagalur has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 80% and female literacy of 73%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
