Chiiori (篪庵? House of the Flute) is the name of an Edo period minka farmhouse in the Iya Valley, Western Tokushima, Japan. Purchased by Alex Kerr in the 1970s, the house is now home to staff members of the Chiiori Project, a non-profit organization based in Iya Valley that is working toward solutions to the problems surrounding depopulation in rural Japan. From 1997 to 2007, Alex shared ownership of Chiiori with Mason Florence. However, in summer of 2007, Alex bought back Mason’s share and since then the house is managed by Alex and the volunteers of the Chiiori Project. The house was closed for renovations in the fall of 2007, but will reopen again for visitors in November 2007.

The new Chiiori Project (which will change its name to the Chiiori Foundation in the spring of 2008) looks forward to implementing, on a broader scale, and with real impact, the original dreams and goals of Chiiori dating back to the early 70’s.
