Chicago White Stockings

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chicago White Stockings was the original name of two professional baseball teams that have played in Chicago, Illinois:

  • Chicago's first professional club, established 1870, played in the National Association for the 1871 season, resumed play in 1874-75 after the Great Chicago Fire, and joined (actually initiated) the National League in 1876. Called the White Stockings through 1889, the nickname "Colts" supplanted "White Stockings". The club is now the Chicago Cubs, a nickname which in turn supplanted "Colts" in the early 1900s.
  • The American League team now known as Chicago White Sox entered Chicago in 1900 and adopted the old name of its crosstown competitor. It was shortened a few years later, perhaps by reporters or headline writers.
