[edit] How the Club started

In 1986, a group of American Football enthusiasts meet on the fields of Handbridge College and started to learn the fundamentals of the game. In June 1986 the newly-named team, the Chester Romans, had a squad of 25. Joined by Paul Kissling from Chicago, they played their first ever game against the Rotherham Redskins in September, which they won 38-25.

The Romans are still playing competitive football after 20 years and regularly play against the best teams the UK has to offer. In 1999, the Romans won the Division 2 championship and gained their place in the top division. After a poor 2005 season the Romans were relegated back to Division 2 but improved their standings after the 2006 season, which saw them regain Division 1 status. Following realignment of the league between the 2006-2007 season the Romans were moved from the BAFL Central Division to the BAFL North Division.

The 2007 season ended with the Romans' record standing at 1 win and 9 losses. Due to this record and BAFL realignments the Romans will begin the 2008 season relegated to Division 2 status, playing the following teams: Edinburgh Wolves, Glasgow Tigers, Lancashire Wolverines, Manchester Titans, and the Merseyside Nighthawks.

[edit] The Romans Motto

The Roman's club motto is “Strength and Honour”, which echoes the motto of the Roman Army.

[edit] The Venue

The Romans both practice and play home games at Chester RUFC, Hare Lane, Chester. The Rugby Club has a covered stand area as well as a pub serving food that is open during Romans home games. Admission to the Romans games is free.

[edit] The Future

The Romans have a Youth Academy that is trying to bring American Football to under-18 youth in Chester and the surrounding areas. Since the establishment of the Romans Youth Academy, a number of local youngsters interested in the sport have come up through the ranks and now play for the Romans, while some have gone on to play at a national level. Matches are played against other youth teams within the North West. The primary aim is to educate the youth in the areas of confidence and teamwork, and to give them an in-depth knowledge of American Football.
