Chelsea was incorporated as a town on March 1, 1851 separating from a portion of Hallowell. The town was named after the town of Chelsea, MA.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.9 square miles (51.6 km²), of which, 19.5 square miles (50.5 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (2.01%) is water. Chelsea is also on the east bank of the Kennebec River.

The Maine-State routes that border Chelsea are routes 9 and 226.

Chelsea borders the cities of Hallowell to its west, and Augusta ot its north, and the towns of Farmingdale to its southwest, Randolph and Pittston to its south, and Whitefield to its east.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,559 people, 959 households, and 701 families residing in the town. The population density was 131.2 people per square mile (50.7/km²). There were 1,015 housing units at an average density of 52.0/sq mi (20.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.99% White, 0.27% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.47% of the population.

There were 959 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 114.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,905, and the median income for a family was $44,688. Males had a median income of $30,793 versus $23,781 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,591. About 13.6% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 21.7% of those age 65 or over.
