A Cheese Coney (not to be confused with the Coney Island hot dog) is a unique food that is served at many restaurants throughout the area of Cincinnati and Greater Cincinnati. Considered a delicacy in Cincinnati, Ohio, no one knows the true history of this food. There are many stories and legends but the one considered one of the most popular is the "Coney Island" story. Not the New York Coney Island but at the Cincinnati Coney Island is where the cheese coney was supposedly created. There are several version of this tale. One goes that a hot dog vendor was competing against another hot dog vendor to create the best hot dog. The hot dog vendor created a hot dog which contained mustard, onions, chili and loads of cheese and his creation became an instant hit. Another story tells of Tom Athanas Kiradjieff an immigrant from Europe. When he first arrived in Cincinnati he visited Coney Island. He had a hot dog that he felt was a bit dull. He decided to spice it up a bit and thus the Cheese Coney.[1] There were already chili dogs back then so many people think a cheese coney is just a chili dog with cheese on it. That is not the case because a cheese coney contains several different things. It is a known as Cheese "Coney" because the food was created at (Cincinnati's) Coney Island!
