His position as Charles III would be a third generation Charles, as his father would be Charles II the Bald, grandson of Charles I (Charlemagne). But his father is never named "Charles II". If we count all Charles crowned kings, we have to add Charles, the son of Charlemagne, dead before his father.

It's a difficult task to put a number next to the king's name when the realm is divided between numerous sons... cf. Rurikids and Dukes of Greater Poland. Souris2005 03:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
