There is an history of Charles Island, Milford, CT on <milfordct.newenglandsite.com/charlesislandcurse/shtml>. It mentions, among other things, that a plantation owner named "Charles Deal" once planned to grow tobacco there around the year 1657. Perhaps from this came the name "Charles Island".
