[edit] Debts

The article says: "In taking office he found debts of 600 million, and no means of paying them." Can anyone clarify - 600 million what? Livres? ecus? And how much would that have been worth in modern terms?

France's national debt was actually 4 billion livre's following the american revolution. the article as written now is incorrect. the 110 million was actually the amount needed to be secured by loans for the payment of the debt. this was not the whole interest on the debt which was annually above 300 million livres.

in the english translation of lefebvre's the coming of the french revolution, it says that 150,000 livres in 1789 had the same meaning and social prestige as 150,000 dollars in 1947. I believe in 1789 it was five livres to dollar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.82.31.211 (talk) 02:07, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
