The photograph labeled Charles Pratt, Founder, is actually of Charles Millard Pratt (1867-1935), the eldest son of Charles Pratt, Sr. (1830-1891). Charles Millard Pratt was a generous benefactor of Pratt Institute, Vassar, and Amherst College, as well as numerous other public and private institutions, donating entire large buildings and other educational needs. He died in Glen Cove in 1935 after serving as a corporate official, notably as Secretary, to the Standard Oil Company. His residences in Brooklyn, Glen Cove (a part of Long Island's turn-of-the-century, north shore, 'gold coast'), and Ojai (Nordhoff) California, are still extant. Pratt Senior had two daughters, and five other sons, all of whom donated generously to social, artistic, literary, library, and general educational organizations. Several Pratts also supported individual artists and scientists privately, as well as very early environmental conservation efforts -- including one son becoming the earliest New York State environmental Commissioner. Pratt Senior was of extraordinary business acumen accomplishing a great deal in a rigorous and often harsh time period just now being reconsidered in its importance within its own context.
