This image is of a book cover, and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover or the publisher of the book. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other use of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information. |
Cover for Chainmail, 3rd Edition.
It appears to be one of the photocopied, post-8th printing copies from after November 1979 ([1]). Notice:
- the 1978-80 TSR logo
- it does not list the price (7th printing copies say "$5.00")
- the paper appears white, not gray

[edit] Fair use for Chainmail (game)
This image, Chainmail 3rd edition.jpg, is being linked here; though the picture is subject to copyright I (··gracefool |☺) feel it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:
- it is a low resolution copy of a book cover;
- it does not limit the rights of the copyright owner (Wizards of the Coast) to sell the book in any way;
- copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the book;
- the book is basically out of date (and out of print?) as Chainmail is replaced by later miniatures wargame systems;
- the artist who made the image, Don Lowry, is significant enough to have his own Wikipedia article.
[edit] Fair use for Dungeons & Dragons
The use of this image in the article named / linked above is claimed as Fair use of copyrighted material because:
- it is a low resolution copy of a book cover;
- a section of the article named above concerns the publication in question;
- the inclusion of the image in the named article makes a significant contribution to the article because it:
- identifies a significant predecessor of the publication in question;
- illustrates a relevant point in the text of the article;
- no free version of the image is available that would serve the equivalent purpose;
- the inclusion of the image in the named article does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the original publication in any way;
- the image cannot be used to replace the original market role of the publication in question.
