From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chautauqua Cinema is movie house located in historic Higgins Memorial Hall on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York in the United States. Higgins Hall is a contributing property in the Chautauqua Institution Institution Historic District.
[edit] History
The 110-year-old Higgins Hall was used by Chautauqua Institution as a meeting place, performance hall and film theater into the 1950's. In 1956, it was converted into a movie theater by the Schmidt family. The building has also been the venue for Sunday Roman Catholic masses both before and after 1956.
[edit] Current Status
The Chautauqua Cinema has a single screen and seats approximately 350 people. The cinema shows at least four different films per week and nearly 50 films altogether during an 11-week summer season that runs from the week before the opening of the Chautauqua season in June through Labor Day. The films shown are a select program, often including independent, foreign, and documentary films that its clientele might not have an opportunity to see in their hometowns. The Chautauqua Cinema is closed during the off-season.
