Charles Stuart (politician)

Charles Allan Stuart (born: August 3, 1864 Middlesex, County, Ontario - died: March 5, 1926 Calgary, Alberta) was a lawyer, provincial and municipal level politician and Supreme Court Justice from Alberta, Canada.

Stuart ran for the first time and was defeated by future Prime Minister Richard Bennett in a by-election for West Calgary for the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories on March 22, 1901.
In the Calgary Municipal election held in December 1904 Stuart won a seat on Calgary city council serving as alderman, he would serve as a member for exactly one year. While still a sitting member of council he ran as a Liberal candidate and was elected as the first member for the electoral district of Gleichen in the 1905 Alberta general election.

Stuart was appointed to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Alberta in 1906 and vacated his legislature seat.
Stuart served as the first Chancellor of the University of Alberta Senate from 1908 until his death on March 5, 1926. In 1915 while still serving as Chancellor he received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University.
