Charles Hughes (representative)

Charles Hughes was a United States Representative from New York. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 27, 1822. He completed preparatory studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Sandy Hill, New York. He was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1855).

Hughes also served as clerk of the court of appeals, provost marshal for the sixteenth district of New York, was a member of the Governor’s staff and judge advocate general of the State militia. He served as a member of the New York State Senate. After leaving political office, he resumed the practice of his profession and died in Sandy Hill on August 10, 1887. His interment was in Union Cemetery, between Fort Edward and Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls).
