Charles Dickinson West

Charles Dickinson West (1847-1908) was an Irish mechanical technologist.
He was a teacher of Imperial College of Engineering, rendered service to the naval architecture department foundation in Meiji era.
West was born in Dublin, and studied mechanical engineering in Trinity College Dublin, and then worked in Bergenhead steel company for five years. In that time he studied naval engineering. In Meiji 15, as a replacement of Henry Dyer, he came to Japan as an Oyatoi Gaikokujin of Kobu Daigakko in 1882, and lectured mechanical engineering and naval architecture. He stayed in Japan for the rest of his life until his death in 1908. There is a statue of him in a part of campus at Tokyo University.
