Charlemagne, Quebec is an off-island suburb of Montreal, located on the north shore of the Rivière des Prairies, 24 kilometres (15 mi) northeast of its downtown core. As of 2006, the population was 5,804. The area is known for its poverty and high crime rate.
It is the birthplace of singer Céline Dion, after whom it has named one of its main streets (without the approval of the Commission de toponymie du Québec [1]) and to whom it has raised a large monument, and politician Camille Laurin.
