[edit] Main characters
[edit] Ryu
Ryu (リュウ Ryū?) is a descendant of the Light Dragon Clan, as evidenced by a has a dragon-shaped mark on his forehead. He is awoken one night by a vision of a dragon (presumably the Dragon Lord) warning him that he is danger.[1] Seeking to eliminate all surviving Light Dragons, the Dark Dragons set fire to his village of Drogen (Dragnier in Japan). His sister, Sara, tries to distract the invaders so the other villagers will survive; she is captured after a brief battle with the Dark Dragon commander, Jade. The next morning, Ryu resolves to journey to the Dark Dragon homeland and rescue his sister.
Along the way, Ryu is drawn into a quest to collect the six "goddess keys"; the Dark Dragon Emperor, Zog, plans to use them to release Tyr, a destructive goddess and cause of the original "Goddess War". Unbeknownst to Ryu, Zog's top lieutenant (Jade) is plotting to overthrow his master and summon Tyr himself. Jade assists Ryu in secret and allows him and his friends to assemble the six keys. After Zog is defeated at Ryu's hand, Jade sends Sara (now brainwashed and under Jade's control) to coerce him into handing over the keys. Ryu is forced to fight Sara inside Jade's flying fortress, the Obelisk, after she transforms into a white dragon and attacks him. Mortally wounded, Sara forgives Ryu and urges him to stop Jade. Ryu defeats the would-be conqueror inside his throne room. Jade seems to have expected Ryu's victory, having glimpsed his fate when he released Tyr from her prison.
At the beginning of the story, Ryu is a strong physical fighter, but lacks the dragon powers of his ancestors (as do other survivors of his clan). By visiting Dragon Shrines on the overworld, he can re-learn his ancestor's abilities by challenging the Dragon Lord. On the world map, he can fish.
[edit] Nina
Nina (ニーナ Nīna?) is the Princess of Winlan and a member of the Wing Clan. After Nina's father, the King, refuses to ally with the Dark Dragons, he is poisoned by a letter sent by Zog. The Wizard of Karma is believed to have had a hand in the attack. Against the advice of her aides, Nina resolves to find the Wizard and force him to hand over the Remedy, the only thing which can save her father. Shortly after leaving castle, she is joined by two Wing Clan knights who want to ensure her safety. Although they make it to the top of Karma Tower, the Wizard debilitates them with his deadly Xeon Gas. A lone knight manages to fly back to Winlan and warn the guards of Nina's capture. Ryu, who has been resting at the castle, is asked to rescue Nina from the tower; since he is not a member of the Wing Clan, the Xeon Gas will not effect him. Upon being saved, Nina decides to join Ryu in his quest to stop Zog.
In an attempt to save the people of Carmen, who are frozen in time, Nina volunteers to re-insert the Time Key into the machine at Tock. An accident occurs, sending Nina into a time portal and transporting her several years into the past. She falls out of the sky and lands in Tunlan, where she develops amnesia. [2] Over the years, she is looked after by an elderly couple. Ryu and his party travel to Tunlan shortly after her disappearance. Nina has aged during her time there, but cannot remember Ryu. With Jade's help, Nina's memory is restored and she rejoins the party.
Nina knows a wide variety of healing and support magic. Later in the game, she can transform into a giant bird, greatly simplifying the traveling on the world map.
[edit] Bo
Bo (ギリアム Giriamu?) is a hunter from Tuntar and member of the Forest Clan, a tribe of anthropomorphic wolves. Bo's people used to reside in the forests and know them better than anyone. In recent times, they have migrated to the river town of Tantar. He joins Ryu because they both have a common enemy. He knows some offensive spells, and on world map he can hunt food and lead the party through forests.
[edit] Karn
Karn (ダンク Danku?) is a crafty thief who can pick any lock and disarm any trap. Ryu meets him after being arrested by authorities in Auria. He is first seen taking a nap in the same cell as Ryu. Karn casually unlocks the cell door for him and then goes back to sleep, implying that could leave any time he wants to. Ryu's party later tracks him down to Arad, where he is seeking "the Book", a fabled guide for master thieves. The daughter of a wealthy man in Auria, Ross, has locked herself in his vault and refuses to leave; Ryu agrees to locate Karn and ask him to unlock the safe.
Ryu's party follows Karn into a crypt, where they accidentally trigger a booby-trap which threatens to flood the room and drown them. Karn reappears and easily disables the trap.[3] The "Book" turns out to be a hoax; the intent of the crypt was to test Karn's skills as a thief, thereby proving his worth. Karn is pleased to be validated as the "greatest", and agrees to help free Ross's daughter.
Karn later learns that he belongs to a family whose blood line enables him to learn different ways to "fuse" with other characters into large monster forms.
[edit] Gobi
Gobi (マニーロ Manīro?) is a Manillo, a bipedal fish creature who can breathe on land. He belongs to the Merchant Clan, which is based in the undersea city of Prima; the clan boasts that it will one day dominate the world's commerce. Gobi's sales license was revoked because he was considered too greedy even for his kind.[4][5] When he first greets Ryu's party, he agrees to sell them gunpowder for an exorbitant price (a bar of gold). He later helps them board a Dark Dragon ship and detonate the ammunition onboard. The entire party is thrown clear of the ship and stranded on a desert island.
Gobi offers to sell Ryu the "Gills" a device which will allow him to breathe underwater, for a whopping one million gold pieces. Since Ryu cannot hope to pay such an amount, Gobi seizes all of the money Ryu has on hand and agrees to "loan" him the rest.[6] Gobi sets out alone to retrieve the Gills. Along the way, he witnesses Ox dying in Prima. A grim reaper arrives to claim Ox's soul; in a panic, the Merchant Guild Owner turns to Gobi for help. Gobi offers to bring a back "warrior" (Ryu) and drive off the ghost, but only if the Clan agrees to pays Gobi a fee first. By helping Ryu free Ox's people from a Dark Dragon labor camp, Gobi proves his worth to the Guild Owner, and he gets his license back. Gobi continues to tag along with Ryu, ostensibly because he "still owes [Gobi] money".[7]
Later, he can also transform to giant fish, able to transport the party through the seas quickly.
[edit] Bleu
Bleu (ディース Dīsu?) is an immortal with strong magical powers and a serpents tail, resembling a Naga. She was the sorceress that sealed Tyr many ages ago. Because she's been asleep for so many years, she has forgotten most of her spells and more often than not botches them up. She does not have a map ability.
[edit] Ox
Ox (ビルダー Birudā?), as him name suggests, is an Ox-man the Iron Ogre Clan. His clan was forced into labor by the Dark Dragon to build a secret weapon. He has a wife and is expecting a child soon.
[edit] Mogu
Mogu (モグ Mogu?) is a mole-man with the ability to dig through anything. He fought against the Dragon Clan but was trapped in a nightmare world by one of the Dark Dragon lieutenants before being freed by Ryu and his gang. His people are being exploited by the Dark Dragon in order to excavate an ancient weapon. He has a sister named Anne.
[edit] Antagonists
[edit] Tyr
Tyr ("Myria" in Japan) is the main antagonist of Breath of Fire. Better known as the "Goddess of Desire" and the "Goddess of Destruction", she is the cause of the original Goddess War. Thousands of years in the past, Tyr instigated the "Goddess War" which was fought between the Light and Dark Dragons. She is capable of granting any wish, though her real motive is to encourage others to fight over her power.[8] Just as the war was bringing the world to the brink of destruction, an Light Dragon "hero" and his comrades sealed Tyr within a tower and locked her away with six keys.
In the present day, Tyr is freed by Jade and placed inside the flying fortress Obelisk.[9] She greets Ryu in the guise of a little girl. However, Sara's spirit appears and warns that Tyr is deceiving him.[10] When struck by Ryu's ultimate dragon form, Agni, Tyr reverts her true demonic state.[11] The Obelisk crumbles to pieces when Tyr is defeated, though she promises to one day return.[12]
[edit] Zog
Zog ("Zorgon" in Japan) is the Emperor of the Dark Dragon family. He believes that one man should rule the world.[13] To that end, he sends his soldiers to locate the goddess keys which will release Tyr. He is confronted inside the Dark Dragon headquarters in Scande by Ryu and transforms into a gigantic dragon. Upon Zog's defeat, his lieutenant Jade becomes the de facto Emperor.[14]
[edit] Jade
Jade ("Judas" in Japan) is Zog's second-in-command. He appears in the prologue of the game as the leader of the army which destroys Ryu's village. Sara goes out alone to drive out the invading Dark Dragons, but is soundly defeated by Jade. He then places a brainwashing spell on Sara which forces her to obey him.[15] Jade's loyal henchman are the Four Devas. Jade's real ambition is to release Tyr on his own and depose Zog as Emperor. He periodically disguises himself with a cloak and offers hints to Ryu. With Jade's advice, Ryu is able to cure Nina of her amnesia, then locate a weapon which can severely hurt Zog. Once Zog is beaten, Jade sends Sara to steal the goddess keys from Ryu. The moment he releases Tyr, Jade foresees that he is destined to lose.[9] He congratulates and offers Ryu a chance to serve him,[16] but is rebuffed. He transforms into a monster before being defeated.
[edit] Cort
Cort is the second of Jade's four devas. He is bald, blue-skinned scientist wearing a red monocle. He specializes in magic potions and transforming people into monsters. He plants a giant flower just outside the town of Gust which turns its people insane.[17] When Ryu's party runs into Cort in his lab, he douses them with a formula which causes them to shrink to the size of mice. One of Cort's test subjects is the Nicholie, who turns into the hulking monster Rouge X.[18] Ryu kills Cort's mutant flower and restores the sanity of Gust's villagers. Cort attacks Nicholie while he is busy with the bridge's reconstruction, and is waiting for Ryu when he arrives. He turns into a Horn Toad, but is defeated.
[edit] Mote
Mote ("Sigmund" in Japan) is the third of Jade's Four Devas. He is a diminutive, imp-like creature who controls the Sky Tower. Mote's powers allow him terrorize people in their dreams. When the Dark Dragons capture members of the Digging Clan for slave labor, Mote leaves Mogu trapped in a comatose state, trapped in his own dreams.[19] Ryu and his friends enter Mogu's mind and exorcise his nightmares by defeating Mothro. When confronted in his tower, Mote traps the party inside his subconscious, but his conscience help them defeat him.[20]
[edit] Cerl
Cerl ("Carla" in the Japan) is the third of Jade's Four Devas. Cerl and Alan used to live in a seaside village as chldren; Cerl expressed her wish to marry Alan when they got older.[21] She was later banished by the villagers because she "wasn't human".[22] Cerl takes over the tower of Tock and stops time for the townspeople of Carmen. Alan is wounded by Cerl after trying to bring her to her senses. Cerl transforms into a centaur with mantis-like claws for hands. Before she can be defeated, she uses the Time Key to throw the party clear of the tower. Cerl feels regret for hurting Alan, and willingly hands over the Time Key.[23][24] Goda arrives to punish Cerl for her treachery; Cerl teleports the party outside of the castle while she stays to hold Goda off.[25] Just before Cerl perishes, Alan appears and rushes inside to save her. The castle fades from existence, taking both Cerl and Alan with it. A childhood vision of Cerl is later seen inside the empty foundation of the castle.
[edit] Goda
Goda is an armored strongman and the last of Jade's lieutenants. He apparently kills Cerl when she relinquishes the Time Key to Ryu,[25] and later resurfaces inside Obelisk. He remains loyal to Jade after the death of Zog, referring to him as "Emperor Jade".[14] Goda transforms himself into a stone golem and attack Ryu's party, but is defeated.
[edit] Wizard of Karma
The Wizard of Karma is a powerful lich who is in league with the Dark Dragon family. He assisted Zog in poisoning the King of Winlan.[26] While experimenting with the "Remedy", he contaminated the soil of Romero, causing undead villagers to crawl out of the ground.[27] When confronted inside his tower by Nina and her guards, the Wizard immobilizes them with Xeon Gas, which is deadly to members of Wing Clan.[28] However, Ryu is not affected by the gas,[29] and is able to defeat him and rescue Nina.
[edit] Mothro
Mothro is manifestation of Mogu's nightmares. It first appears as a small boy inside Mogu's subconscious, and is seemingly impossible to defeat. It mocks Ryu's party when they are unable to cause damage to it.[30] Ryu locates Mogu's Courage and convinces him to fight Mothro. With "Courage" no longer afraid of him, Mothro reverts to its true form (a giant moth), but is defeated.
[edit] Supportings characters
[edit] Sara
Sara ("Seira" or "Sayla" in Japan) is the village priestess of Dragnier and Ryu's older sister. She defends the Light Dragon Clan in the beginning of the game. Jade controls her, but she resists it to some degree, lowering the barrier preventing Ryu from passing through the Goddess's towers.[15] Ryu senses her spirit twice toward the end of the game.
[edit] Dragon Lord
The Dragon Lord is a wise spirit who embodies the power of the Dragon Clan. He is first glimpsed in the prologue when he urges Ryu to wake up during the Dark Dragon siege. He can be found in Dragon Shrines all over the world, where he offers to record the party's progress. He also challenges Ryu to one-on-one battles inside Dragon Temples.
[edit] King of Winlan
The King of Winlan is Nina's father and the monarch of the Wing Clan. When Zog offered to form an alliance with Winlan, the King refused him.[31] In retaliation, Zog sent him a poison-laced letter.[26] The attack has left the King bedridden and dying. With Ryu's help, Nina obtains the Remedy and cures her father. The King shows his appreciation by allowing Ryu passage through Winlan's bridge.
[edit] Princess of Tunlan
The Princess of Tunlan is a vain young woman who is enamored with Zog.[32] In return for cooperating with the Dark Dragons, Zog has promised that Tyr will grant her wish for immortality. She wishes to relinquish the Time Key so she and Zog can remain young forever.[33] The Key is locked inside a vault with a secret combination. An old woman who took care of the Princess as a child reveals to Ryu how to get inside: the Princess has marks on her back which reveal the combination.[34] Ryu sneaks into the castle and catches sight of them while the Princess is bathing. He mistakenly inputs the combination backwards, having glimpsed it in the pool's reflection.
[edit] Ross
Ross is wealthy man and owner of the biggest house in Auria. The Light Key, one of the six goddess keys, is stored in Ross' tower, which accounts for all of Auria's riches. Ross' daughter opposes his decision to give the key to the Dark Dragons; in defiance, she purposely locks herself inside his vault, preventing him from accessing the key. Ross is more concerned about his daughter and petitions Ryu for help.[35] In return, he promises to let Ryu use his ship to cross the ocean.
Ryu returns with Karn, a master lock picker, and opens the vault. Surprisingly, Ross' daughter refuses to leave. She confides that if her late mother were still alive, she would be able to convince Ross not to part with the Light Key.[36] Ryu and his friends use a magical Mirror to summon the spirit of Ross' wife,[37] who urges him not obey the Dark Dragons.
[edit] Alan
Alan is Cerl's childhood friend. He accompanines Ryu's party on their way to Tock,[38] and is wounded while trying to reason with Cerl. While recovering in bed, he convinces Ryu to bring Cerl fruit from the beach where they grew up. As Cerl is being attacked by Goda, Alan rushes into Cerl's fading fortress, presumably dying in the process. Like Cerl, he later reappears as a child in the former location of the fortress.
[edit] Nicholie
Nicholie is a bridge builder and citizen of Gust, a town located in the mountains. He disappears after being abducted by Cort as a test subject. Cort's experiments cause Nicholie to randomly change into a hostile monster, Rouge X. Not realizing that the beast is Nicholie, Ryu badly wounds him in a fight. Bleu manages to cure Nicholie's condition with frog oil.[39] Nicholie is again attacked by Cort while he is trying to repair Gust's bridge. Fortunately, Ryu saves him.
[edit] Stone robot
The stone robot is a ancient machine which resembles a giant stone golem. After the Dark Dragons blockade the river which leads to Tantar and Tuntar, the chiefs of both villagers suggest using the robot to destroy the dam. Though the river is successfully restored,[40] the Dark Dragon General hijacks the robot and directs it to destroy Tuntar. Before the General can turn his sights on the neighboring village of Tantar, Ryu and his party re-enter the robot's control room and defeat him. The stone robot, weary of being used for human purposes, climbs a nearby volcano and drowns itself in the molten lava.
[edit] Tina
A resident of Gust and companion of Nicholie. She becomes very angry with Ryu's party after they harm him while thinking he is a monster.[39]
[edit] Terry
A member of Bo's clan and a resident of Tantar. He is romantically involed with a human woman, Amelia, in the nearby town of Tuntar. Terry is wounded by a Dark Dragon arrow,[41] but recovers in time for his wedding to Amelia. The ceremony is broken up when the General commandeers the Stone robot and obliterates Tuntar. In the end, the residents of Tuntar relocate to Tantar, and the humans and Forest Clansman are on better terms.
[edit] Amelia
A human girl and resident of Tantar's neighboring village, Tunar. Ryu and his party attend her wedding to Terry.
