Characters in the Deverry cycle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article list the characters in the Deverry cycle by Katherine Kerr.

Nevyn: Nevyn is a traveling herbman-- an apothecary-physician who practices herbal medicine. He is also a powerful sorcerer known as the Master of Aethyr. In his youth, he was Galrion, a prince of Deverry, but was stripped of that name along with all his rank and titles. His new name, Nevyn, means "no one" in the language of Deverry. When his selfish actions resulted in the death of his Brangwen, his betrothed and a woman with the potential to be a great sorceress, Nevyn swore "not to rest" until he set things right when she was reborn. Nevyn lived several hundred years, and Brangwen was reborn many times, before he finally fulfilled his oath.

Other incarnations: Neb.

Cullyn of Cerrmor: Cullyn was once a rider, or cavalryman, in the service of the Gwerbert of Cerrmor. In a fight over a woman, he killed one of his fellow riders, and thrown out of the gwerbret's warband. Cullyn was forced to become a "silver dagger," or mercenary. Though despised for being a mercenary, Cullyn is renowned as the greatest swordsman in the kingdom: his daughter says he can cut a falling apple into quarters with his sword.

Cullyn fought alongside Rhodry Maelwaedd against rebells who wished Rhodry dead, after which Rhodry took Cullyn into his service, making him the captain of his warband.

Other incarnations: Gerraent, Tanyc, Cinvan, Dannyn, Owaen, Danry, Gwairyc, Gerran.

Jill: Cullyn's daughter, who has latent talent for dweomer. As a child, she followed her father on his wanderings. During Loddlaen's dweomer war, she fell in love with Rhodry Maelwaedd, and rode with him when Rhodry was sent into exile by the gwerbret of Aberwyn. After rescuing Rhodry from slavery, she leaves him behind in order to study dweomer under Nevyn.

Other incarnations: Brangwen, Lyssa, Gweniver, Branoic, Morwen, Branna.

Aderyn: The son of a bard, Aderyn is Nevyn's former apprentice in dweomer, who lives with the Westfolk. Like Nevyn, although for different reasons, he has a preternaturally long life. He can transform himself into an owl.

Other incarnations: Brangwen and Gerraent's unborn child.

Rhodry Maelwaedd: A younger son of the previous Gwerbret of Aberwyn, Rhodry is sent into political exile after Loddlaen's dweomer war. During his wanderings, he is captured and sold as a slave in the Bardekian islands.

Other incarnations: Blaen, Gwerran, Ricyn, Maddyn, Maer, Meddry

Other incarnations: Ylaena, Bellyra, Glaenara

EbaƱy Salmonderiel tranDevaberiel: Usually known as Salamander for brevity. He is half-elven gerthddyn (a traveling singer and entertainer) as well as a journeyman dweomerworker. His manner of speaking is often overly verbose and flowery; Jill often addresses him as "you chattering elf!" In later books, he becomes a powerful dweomermaster in his own right, and spends more of his time travelling with his Westfolk kin.

Valandario: An elven dweomermaster (Wise One) and gem master who can use gems to scry and search for omens. She was Salamander's master in the craft, and her only lover was murdered by Loddlean. In later books, she aids Dallandra and Salamander, as well as restores the horn that summons the Shadow Isle.

Loddlaen: A half-elven sorcerer, taught dweomer by Aderyn. Aderyn and Dallandra's son. Though he had the talent for dweomer, he lacked the proper discipline, and eventually went mad.

Otho: A dwarven silversmith. He was exiled from dwarven lands because he would not pay a debt.

Arzosah: A copper, green and black dragon who dwells in the far northern mountains. Her true name, Arzosah Sothy Lorezohas, is inscribed on a ring which gives its owner the power to command her. Compelled by the power of her true name, she assisted in the defense of Cengarn.
