Chadden Michael Kreuter (pronounced /ˈkɹutɚ/; born August 26, 1964 in Greenbrae, California) is a former catcher in Major League Baseball and the current head coach of the USC Trojans baseball team.
Kreuter played for seven different ballclubs during his career: the Texas Rangers (1988-1991, 2003), Detroit Tigers (1992-1994), Seattle Mariners (1995), Chicago White Sox (1996-1997, 1998), Anaheim Angels (1997-1998), Kansas City Royals (1999) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2000-2002). He made his major league debut on September 14, 1988, and played his final game in 2003.
Kreuter was named the coach of the USC Trojans on June 2, 2006, after former coach Mike Gillespie (who is also his father-in-law) retired.
[edit] Brawl in the stands
Kreuter was best known for his involvement in a brawl that was initiated when fans, led by Josh Pulliam of Sacramento, CA, stole his cap resulting in suspensions for him and several teammates. On May 16, 2000, in the ninth inning of a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Kreuter was sitting in the bullpen when a fan grabbed his hat. Kreuter retaliated and then his teammates came out of the dugout to join the brawl. The fans were ejected and the game was delayed for 10 minutes.
Kreuter was suspended for eight games, coaches Rick Dempsey, John Shelby, and Glenn Hoffman were suspended for eight games, pitcher Carlos Perez, outfielder F.P. Santangelo, and outfielder Gary Sheffield were suspended for five games, pitcher Mike Fetters was suspended for four games and the following players received three game suspensions: pitchers Eric Gagné, Terry Adams, Darren Dreifort, Onan Masaoka, Alan Mills, Antonio Osuna, and Chan Ho Park, catcher Todd Hundley, first baseman Eric Karros, and outfielders Geronimo Berroa and Shawn Green. That was a total of 60 games for the players and 24 for the coaches and all suspended Dodgers were fined. After an appeal, most of the suspensions were overturned and only Kreuter, Dempsey, Shelby, Sheffield, Perez, and Santangelo had their suspensions upheld and Fetters' suspension was reduced to one game.
