Château de Cordès

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Château de Cordès is a castle situated at an altitude of 900m in the commune of Orcival, in the Puy-de-Dôme département of France.

The castle dates from the 15th century, but was altered during the 17th and 18th centuries. It has been listed since 1933 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.

The exterior facade on the Sioulet River side is decorated with machicolation. Its gardens (rose trees and hedges) were designed by Le Nôtre in 1695.

In 1724, Yves II d'Allègre, Maréchal of France and companion of Bayard, repaired and embellished the feudal castle, particularly the interiors, and the gardens. His decorations included stucco, painted woodwork, a stone chimney and paving with earthenware tiles.

Inside, one can admire a Carrara marble altarpiece dating from the 16th century and the sculptured tomb of Yves II. The living room is decorated with plaster work dating from the 18th century.

It is here that at the Château de Cordès that Paul Bourget set the action of his novel, Le démon de midi.
