Cesare Ciardi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cesare Ciardi (1818, Firenze – 1877, Strel'na) was an Italian flautist and composer.
[edit] Life
Born to a Tuscan family, Ciardi eventually settled in 1853 in Russia, where he was appointed in 1862 as professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and became Tchaikovsky's flute teacher. Ciardi himself played as first flute in the Italian Opera Theater Orchestra (and was succeeded by Ernesto Köhler after his death).
Ciardi possessed many talents and was also a sculptor and caricaturist.
[edit] Work
Ciardi wrote numerous studies for flute, such as the Solo Pieces. His Carnaval russe for flute and piano (also orchestrated) is still played occasionally today.
