Talk:Central Avenue (Five Towns)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Created page. I'm undecided on whether this article should be considered a stub. I noticed that the last article on this particular street was deleted early June 2005. I don't know how bad it was- hopefully this article is better. Some people had concern over having Central Avenue refer specifically to the Five Towns one; I simply linked to it from the disambiguation page. Scytheml 21:25, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm having a little bit of a problem where it says "Jewish teenagers." I went to Lawrence High School and anyone who was anyone went to Central Ave or "town" as it was affectionately called; not just Jewish teenagers. Though many of the shops there do cater to the Jewish population, it might be better to change from Jewish teenagers to just teenagers. Do you think we can re-word or restructure the article considering how important Central Avenue is to the area? Thanks! MetsFan76 02:51, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. While the area is an important center for the local Jewish community in general, and Orthodox community in particular, its importance as a shopping area is almost undiscussed. I've been looking through New York Times articles for articles, and there are several that could be referenced. In My youth, Central Avenue was one of the main shopping streets for a huge swathe of Southwestern Nassau County, and was featured in advertisements from major manufacturers as a destination. The street has changed, but all of that would make for a far more thorough article than focusing on where Jewish teens hang out. Alansohn 03:12, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Ok sounds good. What about the Nassau Herald or the South Shore Record? I'm sure they have tons of articles about Central Ave. It's been awhile since I have been there but I'm pretty sure Gino's and Mother Kelly's are still around which generally caters to non-Orthodox or people other than the Jewish faith. I think the problem is what defines Central Ave? Do you count the side streets? If so, then there are the bars "Side Street" and "The Willow." Also, I'm not too sure if The Bagelry and Haagen-Dagz are kosher. Man...its been awhile. =) MetsFan76 03:18, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
"Because the population of this area is overwhelmingly Jewish (mostly Orthodox and Charedi), there are a disproportionate number of different types of stores in the area; for example, a relatively high number of dry cleaners and a correspondingly low number of bars and pubs." -I don't necessarily agree with this statement. First, I'm confused with how an area that is frequented by people of the Jewish faith would be a reason to have a high number of dry cleaners and a low number of bars. I know of atleast three bars in the Business District of Central Avenue within 0.5 miles of each other. I think this statement should be re-structured as it sounds a little POV.
