[edit] Ferrers

[edit] Earls of Derby

Further information: Earl of Derby

The Ferrers earls of Derby originated from Ferrières-Saint-Hilaire which is located in Eure, France. The Ferrers family arrived in England with the Norman conquest of England and acquired vast estates in Derbyshire. The particular origin of the family is confirmed by the fact the family brought over their under-tenants who held lands for them in France. The Boscherville, Curzon, and Livet families all derive their names from locations within the barony of Ferrières in Normandy. The Norman branch of the family, in the male line, is known to have existed until the early 16th century.[1]

[edit] Devon and Cornwall

According to Lewis Cristopher Loyd the Ferrers of Devon and Cornwall are of the same stock. He gives their origin as Ferrières in Manche, France, which is located 12 km south of Mortain. In 1068 Bere Ferrers, Devon (Birland) and Newton Ferrers, in Devon (Niwetona) were held by Reginald de Valletorte from Robert, Count of Mortain. The Ferrers surname first appears in Devon with Ralf de Ferrers in 1168. Earlier in 1112 Roger de Ferrariis was recorded among other witnesses from "de valle Moritonii" in a charter of Henry I for the confirmation of the abbey of Savigny. According to Loyd the Ferrers of Churston Ferrers in Devon may be cadets to the mentioned family.[1]
